Hello. I am a Massachusetts educator certified in to teach English grades 8 through 12, math grades 5 through 12, and theatre grades Kindergarten through 12. I have a Master's Degree of Education in High School Mathematics.

For six years I have been employed as a high school math teacher, mostly specialized in MCAS prep but spending some time teaching Algebra 2, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. I also have degrees from Fitchburg State College in literature and theatre, so although it is currently not my most recent position, I have tutored and taught English for school and MCAS prep.

I have worked with students in small groups to help them pass the MCAS, to help them keep up with their classes while they were out of the school building for physical or behavioral reasons, and to help them pass courses they have elected to take over and above their high school requirements. I have also helped tutor adults who have had college requirements to meet, and I try to help my son become a math prodigy, but he seems to prefer science, with my reluctant approval.

As part of my degrees in Literature and Theatre, I have participated in many discussions involving the merits and drawbacks of cinematic interpretations of novels and plays. For a majority of two school years, I taught a course in Cinema Appreciation.

I’ve worked with multiple students planning to take a high stakes assessment, from middle school to graduate school. My strategy for tutoring students who want improved test scores is to research the specific exam the client needs to take and find the proven strategies for that test. The first few sessions involve myself and client practicing all of the test taking tips known to work to be prepared for the testing environment. After we established how to approach the test, the client becomes the instructor to teach me the material of the assessment, say Geometry. Teaching someone how to complete a task is proven to be the studying activity which creates the longest lasting memories. In addition to the student learning the material, they forget most of their test anxiety, which is actually just as effective for increasing their scores.

A student will probably find themselves studying almost every day of the week, with homework, projects, outside reading, and test preparations. If they use the following skills, they will save time, energy, and improve their understanding of the subject they were studying.Time-Management - It is not the amount of time you spend studying that matters. It's what you can accomplish during that time. Spending 40 hours to prepare for an exam and only earning a C clearly was a waste of your time. Develop a study plan and learn how to manage your time effectively to maximize your results. Motivation - If you are not motivated and have a poor attitude, your study session will not be very productive. You have just one opportunity to pass that Geometry exam or ace the term paper. Pick a time of day where you can get motivated to prepare for tests, write essays, and solve problems. Concentration - The ability to concentrate is one of the more important study skills you need to develop. You won't always be able to study in absolute silence or be able to spend as much time as you would like on a particular project. Learn how to overcome distractions so you can focus all your attention on your studies. When in doubt, ask - If you aren't sure about a particular topic, don't be shy. Ask your instructor, family, or friends for help. It is important to address the problem area as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will end up having to spend even more time studying to catch up.

Many people think of algebra as the branch of mathematics in which you have to figure out the value of variables. While this process is certainly part of algebra, the study of algebra is actually the study of relationships between elements that change over time, such as demand for a product and its price. Most American students begin their study of algebra with an introductory unit in their middle school or junior high math courses. In this unit, they are usually exposed to very basic algebraic equations, such as X + 3 = 8, and taught how to solve these equations for X.In Algebra 1, in addition to getting additional practice in solving simple equations, students learn how to solve two-step equations. They also study equations and inequalities containing two variables, learn to calculate geometric values, such as the slope of a line, and are exposed to the existence of matrices as a tool for solving two-variable equations.

Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is a high school mathematics class often required for graduation. Algebra 2 expands upon the principles students learned in Algebra 1, including rules of operations and relations. The topics studied in Algebra 2 include equations and inequalities, quadratic functions, powers and polynomials.Students who study Algebra 2 work to solve equations using matrices. The course also sees the introduction of concepts such as exponential and logarithmic functions.Algebra 2 helps students who want jobs that involve chemistry, medicine and physics. It is also helpful in business and economics because algebra teaches how one variable affects another.

Geometry,

Geometry

Geometry comes in two catagories:1. mathematics of shapes: the branch of mathematics that is concerned with the properties and relationships of points, lines, angles, curves, surfaces, and solids2."Euclidean geometry" or "solid geometry": a set of distinct theories or its application to a particular type of problem or objectThe first type of geometry is found on the MCAS and is more often taught in geometry classes. The second type is less common as it is the type of geometry built on logic and rules, called proofs. These proofs are often difficult for students to build and make geometry their least favorite branch of math.

Precalculus,

Precalculus

Precalculus is really just a way to get you acquainted with the main ideas of calculus: functions, rates of change, and accumulation. Moreover, precalculus attempts to show you that each of these ideas can serve as a mathematical model of a tremendous number of phenomena in our everyday experience. Most of precalculus is just looking at examples, listening for these key words and phrases as they are used to describe different situations, and slowly coming to an understanding of how a few simple notions can help us to appreciate the unity among nature's variety. -William Mueller

Ready for homework action!

Michael was very friendly introducing himself and interested in my son's studies. We are very pleased with his first session and look forward to a productive year ahead. Thank you

Wonderful tutor!

Mike has been working with our 14 year old son throughout this Fall semester. He is always prompt, patient, and flexible. Our son (who has several learning disabilities) enjoys working with Mike, and his overall understanding of Algebra concepts and test scores have increased. We highly recommend Mike!

Debra, 22 lessons with Michael

Great tutor.

Mike is a great tutor! He loves math and is highly skilled. His approach is relaxed so he is not stressing my son out. Mike is very patient and offers important tips about exam taking in addition to teaching math. It has been easy to schedule lessons and I highly recommend Mike as a tutor (and I'm picky). Several weeks into tutoring and we couldn't be more pleased. My son's confidence is high because he can see how all the work is paying off. He thinks very highly of his tutor and is grateful for his help, patience and insight.

Daneil, 19 lessons with Michael

Very Positive!

My son had a great session today with Mike. He went over several sample problems and was very patient. He gave him great tips on what is important to remember while taking the SAT. We are very happy with Mike's positive and friendly teaching techniques!

Great tutor

Mike is an excellent tutor. I am a 30 year old global marketing director for a large product safety & certification company, as well as graduate student pursing an MBA in International Marketing. I am 4 classes shy of graduating and like most people who are not mathematically inclined; I saved my math course for the end. I have been dreading these classes for two years and now that I am at the half way point of my first math course, I can truly say I couldn't have done this without Mike. He is very patient with me, explains everything in terms that I understand, and he doesn't make me feel embarrassed for not remembering some pretty basic math functions. I plan to hire Mike again for my next course beginning in September. I would highly recommend Mike to anyone in need of tutoring regardless of age or level of education. Thanks Mike!

Helpful, Patient, and flexible

Great tutor! I had Mike tutor in Math and help with a college essay. My boys were reluctant to have a tutor, but really liked Mike and agreed he helped them and it made a difference.

Tammy, 8 lessons with Michael

Great tutor!

We've been extremely happy with Michael K. He has been tutoring my daughter in math and preparing her for MCAS which she has struggled with. He has a lot of patience and really seems to be relating well with her. I think anyone would be more than happy with him.
