For six years I have been employed as a high school math teacher, mostly specialized in MCAS prep but spending some time teaching Algebra 2, trigonometry, and pre-calculus. I also have degrees from Fitchburg State College in literature and theatre, so although it is currently not my most recent position, I have tutored and taught English for school and MCAS prep.
I have worked with students in small groups to help them pass the MCAS, to help them keep up with their classes while they were out of the school building for physical or behavioral reasons, and to help them pass courses they have elected to take over and above their high school requirements. I have also helped tutor adults who have had college requirements to meet, and I try to help my son become a math prodigy, but he seems to prefer science, with my reluctant approval.

I’ve worked with multiple students planning to take a high stakes assessment, from middle school to graduate school. My strategy for tutoring students who want improved test scores is to research the specific exam the client needs to take and find the proven strategies for that test. The first few sessions involve myself and client practicing all of the test taking tips known to work to be prepared for the testing environment.After we established how to approach the test, the client becomes the instructor to teach me the material of the assessment, say Geometry. Teaching someone how to complete a task is proven to be the studying activity which creates the longest lasting memories. In addition to the student learning the material, they forget most of their test anxiety, which is actually just as effective for increasing their scores.
